{"id":25,"date":"2025-04-16T16:34:30","date_gmt":"2025-04-16T16:34:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/phobic.co.uk\/?page_id=25"},"modified":"2025-04-16T16:34:30","modified_gmt":"2025-04-16T16:34:30","slug":"what-is-therapy-through-play","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/phobic.co.uk\/index.php\/what-is-therapy-through-play\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Therapy through Play?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">W<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">hat is Therapy through Play?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Therapy through play is a method of <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">therapywith<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">children in which a therapist uses a child\u2019s fantasies and the symbolic meanings of <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">his or her<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> play as a medium for understanding and communication with the child.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> (minddisorders.com)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Play and creativity operate out of our awareness, allowing our true feelings and thoughts to come through. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Children communicate their feelings and thoughts <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">through play more naturally than they do<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> through verbal communication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">What will happen?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The counsellor will <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">firstly<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> meet with the referrer (School, parent) to <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">talk about<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> issues the child may be having. The therapy through play will then be arranged to take place at a time and place arranged during this meeting. The sessions usually last about 60 minutes, but can be shorter if the child tires sooner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Where will this happen?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The therapy<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> through play happens either <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">within<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> a room provided by the referrer (school, children\u2019s centre) or <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">within<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> ACCESS\u2019s family room. This room contains toys and creative supplies <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">especially<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> for this purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The space is a safe, confidential and caring environment that enables the child to play safely and freely. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The child is given quality time <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">one to one<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> with the counsellor, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">just<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> playing<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">just<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> being there.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> (playtherapy.org.uk)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">How does therapeutic play work?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The therapeutic play ACCESS offers<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">child centred<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, so the play goes where the child goes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As trust <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is developed<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> with the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">counsellor<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the child will play and talk freely about the things that worry\/trouble them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The counsellor then uses their therapeutic skills to help the child <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">to<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> work through how they feel and develop resilience<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">; <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">enabling them to manage life\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u2019 <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ups and downs in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Who does this work?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Only ACCESS counsellors <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">who are<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> fully qualified in Person-Centred therapy and have additional training <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u2018working<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> with children through play\u2019 carry out <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">his<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">What We Do<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">We provide affordable counselling and emotional support to children, adults, families and groups.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is Therapy through Play?
